Originaire d'Édimbourg, le groupe Writing On The Wall est l’un des représentants les plus sombres et puissants de la scène underground britannique de la fin des années 60. Formé en 1967, il développe un heavy rock psychédélique teinté d’occultisme, dans la lignée de groupes comme Black Widow ou Atomic Rooster. Leur unique album, The Power Of The Picts, publié en 1969 sur Middle Earth Records, est une œuvre intense et brutale, mêlant riffs tranchants, claviers sinistres et ambiances celtiques. Ce disque culte est considéré comme un jalon du proto-heavy britannique, annonçant le doom, le prog obscur et le hard psychédélique des années 70.

Formed in Edinburgh in 1967, Writing On The Wall delivered a dark and aggressive brand of psychedelic hard rock. Their sole LP The Power Of The Picts (1969), released by Middle Earth Records, features haunting vocals, blistering guitar work, and eerie organ textures. Deeply rooted in Scottish mythology and occult imagery, the album remains a hidden gem of the UK underground scene, often cited as a precursor to doom, proto-metal and progressive hard rock. Though short-lived, the band left behind a lasting legacy with this uncompromising record.
