Avec The Alchemist, Home atteint l’apogée de sa créativité. Paru en 1973, ce troisième album du groupe britannique est un concept-album ambitieux et soigné, considéré comme un chef-d’Å“uvre du rock progressif. S’éloignant du folk rock de leurs débuts, Home explore ici des structures complexes, des thèmes philosophiques (inspirés du roman de science-fiction éponyme de Charles Williams) et des arrangements très travaillés. Departing from their earlier folk-rock leanings, the album dives into the depths of progressive rock with a full-fledged concept narrative based on Charles Williams’s mystical novel. With intricate arrangements, dynamic time shifts, and richly textured instrumentation, the band crafts an evocative and cerebral work. Though critically acclaimed, the album failed to chart but has since been revered as an underrated gem of the 1970s British prog scene, especially thanks to Laurie Wisefield’s guitar virtuosity and the ensemble's cohesive performance.
