Released in September 1971, Closer to the Ground is the second album by California-based band Joy of Cooking. Led by Toni Brown (keyboards, vocals) and Terry Garthwaite (guitar, vocals), the group continues its blend of folk, rock, blues, and jazz, while addressing feminist themes. Recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood during June and July 1971, the album features original compositions and rich instrumentation, including electric violin and brass. Though less known than their debut, this album is praised for its musical maturity and sophisticated arrangements.
