Avec Metamorphosis, Iron Butterfly tente un virage musical en s'éloignant de l’organique psychédélisme de ses débuts pour explorer des territoires plus hard rock et blues. L’album, produit par Richard Podolor, marque également un changement de line-up important : Erik Brann est remplacé par le guitariste Mike Pinera (ex-Blues Image) et le soliste Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt. With Metamorphosis, Iron Butterfly steered away from their earlier psychedelic roots toward a heavier, blues-tinged hard rock sound. Produced by Richard Podolor, the album introduced major lineup changes, including the departure of guitarist Erik Brann and the arrival of Mike Pinera (formerly of Blues Image) and lead guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt. The result is a tighter, punchier album with darker undertones and a muscular rhythmic base. Though not as commercially successful as previous efforts, Metamorphosis signaled a band evolving with the musical times.
