Originaire de la baie de San Francisco, Stoneground est un groupe de rock californien à géométrie variable fondé en 1970 autour du chanteur et guitariste Sal Valentino (ex-Beau Brummels). Après deux albums mêlant folk-rock, soul, gospel et psychédélisme, Stoneground 3, sorti en 1972, marque un tournant plus sobre et épuré, avec un recentrage sur les chansons et la voix de Valentino. Cet album présente une orientation plus roots, moins exubérante, mais toujours soutenue par une instrumentation précise et chaleureuse. Il s’agit du dernier disque du groupe avec Valentino avant sa dissolution temporaire.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Stoneground emerged in 1970 as a sprawling collective blending rock, gospel, soul, and psychedelia, led by Sal Valentino (formerly of The Beau Brummels). Stoneground 3, released in 1972, is a stylistic shift from their earlier exuberance. With more restrained arrangements and a focus on Valentino’s songwriting, the album leans into Americana and roots-rock influences. It was the last studio effort before the band’s brief breakup and marks a transition point in their evolving sound.
