I Got Dem Ol 'Kozmic Blues Again Mama! is the first studio album of Janis Joplin, released September 11, 1969. The album was recorded after the separation of Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company. Regularly ignored when discussing the career of Janis Joplin I Got Dem Ol 'Kozmic Blues Again Mama! is like the black sheep of the singer. Non pas qu’il soit vraiment mauvais, les chansons sont pour la plupart de bons titres de soul/rythm’n’blues, Janis chante avec ses tripes et sa voix 茅raill茅e fait des merveilles. Le probl猫me de I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama ! n’est rien d’autre qu’un probl猫me d’orientation musicale.
Fin 1968, Janis a quitt茅 Big Brother & The Holding Company, le groupe dont l’excellent Cheap Thrills devait beaucoup au talent de la chanteuse. Et en ce d茅but 1969, elle se r锚ve en grande pr锚tresse soul. L’id茅e n’est pas idiote, son timbre rugueux et ses intonations sudistes (elle est d’origine texane) suintent le blues du delta et avec l’aide de quelques arrangements de cuivres, elle peut s’imaginer dans la lign茅e des artistes Stax. Elle monte donc le Kozmic Blues Band, en n’oubliant pas d’y incorporer un orgue, des cuivres, bref un groupe de soul typique. Elle peut donc entrer en studio pour incarner son nouvel avatar.
Bien s没r, 茅tant donn茅 l’anonymat de cet album, vous avez sans doute d茅j脿 compris que le r茅sultat n’est pas 脿 la hauteur des attentes de la chanteuse. Coinc茅 entre Cheap Thrills, excellent album d’un bon groupe de rock accompagn茅 d’une excellente chanteuse et Pearl, album solo totalement centr茅 sur sa voix, I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama ! ne rend pas justice 脿 Janis Joplin. Elle a beau hurler, sortir cet esp猫ce de feulement rauque, les arrangements de cuivres sont bien trop pr茅sents, 茅touffants, m锚me pour elle. D猫s Try (Just A Little Bit Harder), les cuivres couvrent sa voix sur les refrains. 脌 vouloir trop insister sur le c么t茅 soul, elle s’est desservie.
