The first impression from listening to the ten gems that make up American Beauty, is the communion that unites the group. Of topics on how to use the choruses, the album is full of spirituality. The influence of the gospel is evident on many occasions, especially on 'Attics of My Life'. Recollection ( 'Candyman', 'Brokedown Place') to resume the hymns in unison ( 'Ripple', 'Sugar Magnolia'), the grateful Dead endorsed the tested recipes of American religious music. The secret to the popularity of the Dead is probably there, in that communion which brings the group and the public around immediate songs and frenzied jams. Even on a finely produced studio album as American Beauty, printing is kept to a concert in an old cozy bar, buttocks screwed on a stool handy Jerry Garcia and his band (and a bottle of Kentucky bourbon, needless to say). Group members are also aware, and are still used to pull a few extra dollars to their loyal fans.

Des thèmes abordés à la manière d’employer les chœurs, l’album est empreint de spiritualité. L’influence du gospel est évidente à maintes reprises, en particulier sur 'Attics of My Life'. Du recueillement ('Candyman', 'Brokedown Place') aux hymnes à reprendre à l’unisson ('Ripple', 'Sugar Magnolia'), le Mort reconnaissant a fait siennes les recettes éprouvées de la musique religieuse américaine. Le secret de la popularité du Dead est sans doute là, dans cette communion qui rassemble le groupe et le public autour de chansons immédiates et de jams endiablés. Même sur un album studio finement produit comme American Beauty, on conserve l’impression d’assister à un concert dans un vieux bar cossu, les fesses vissées sur un tabouret, à portée de main de Jerry Garcia et sa bande (et d’une bonne bouteille de Kentucky bourbon, cela va sans dire). Les membres du groupe en sont d’ailleurs bien conscients, et s’en sont toujours servi pour tirer quelques dollars supplémentaires à leurs fans fidèles.
