Beyond is a quartet consisting of drummer Bobby Caldwell (formerly of Johnny Winter), singer Rod Evans (vocalist of Deep Purple), guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt and bassist Lee Dorman (both coming from Iron Butterfly ). This first album, produced by a record company rather specialized in Southern rock, remains a model if it is a masterpiece of hard rock convoluted. Ferocious riffs and tortuous, often unstoppable, there sometimes give way to more trippy flights if not floydiennes. The success of the drive remain frighteningly skinny.

Captain Beyond est un quatuor constitué du batteur Bobby Caldwell (ancien collaborateur de Johnny Winter), du chanteur Rod Evans (premier vocaliste de Deep Purple), du guitariste Larry « Rhino » Reinhardt et du bassiste Lee Dorman (tous deux provenant d’Iron Butterfly). Ce premier album, produit par une maison de disques plutôt spécialisée dans le rock sudiste, demeure un véritable modèle si ce n’est un chef d’œuvre de hard rock alambiqué. Des riffs féroces et tortueux, souvent imparables, y laissent parfois la place à des envolées plus planantes pour ne pas dire floydiennes. Le succès du disque restera hélas bien maigre.
