Moby Grape - Truly Fine Citizen (1969)

This fourth LP Moby Grape is recorded in three days, produced by the famous Bob Johnston of Columbia. Done in haste, dictated by business and legal constraints in a conflict of interest, the album could have been a total disaster. Well no ! It is pleasantly surprising, cool, simple and effective even if the consistency and variety make it sometimes lacking. It smells tinged psychedelic rock country (Moby Grape had already dabbled in country album Moby Grape '69) and contains very good songs like 'Looper' (one of their older titles), 'Changes Circles Spinning' 'Truly Fine Citizen', 'Now I Know High' and 'Tongue-Tied "(Jerry Miller and Skip Spence). Another underrated record, this is the least we can say.

Ce quatrième LP de Moby Grape est enregistré en trois jours, produit par le célèbre Bob Johnston de Columbia. Fait dans la précipitation, dicté par des contraintes juridiques et commerciales, en plein conflit d'intérêts, l'album aurait pu être une catastrophe totale. Et bien, non ! Il est agréablement surprenant, cool, simple et efficace même si la cohérence et la variété lui font parfois défaut. Il fleure bon le rock psychédélique teinté de country (Moby Grape avait déjà tâté du country dans l'album Moby Grape' 69) et contient de très bons morceaux comme 'Looper' (un de leurs anciens titres), 'Changes Circles Spinning', 'Truly Fine Citizen', 'Now I Know High' et 'Tongue-Tied' (de Jerry Miller et Skip Spence). Encore un disque sous-estimé, c'est le moins que l'on puisse dire.
