Connu au moins du grand public pour sa sublime balade 'Baker Street', Rafferty était sorti des radars depuis un dernier album enregistré en 1979, Night Owl. Snakes and Ladders fait partie de ses albums les plus intéressants et les plus convaincants dans cette veine folk rock qui le caractérise. On y trouve un nombre incroyable d'excellents morceaux avec notamment le très beau "The Right Moment" qui sera réenregistré plus tard par Olivia Newton-John. Les albums de ces années là étaient pétris de trouvailles électroniques ou plutôt synthétiques qui donnent à l'écoute aujourd'hui un côté assez daté à ces productions. Peu à l'aise sur scène, Rafferty a connu une fin de carrière à éclipses. Toutefois la qualité de ses textes, son sens de la mélodie et son charisme si particulier font que Gerry Rafferty, décédé à 63 ans après avoir sombré dans un alcoolisme violent, aura profondément marqué l'histoire du folk.

Gerry Rafferty, musicien écossais révélé avec Stealers Wheel dans les années 70, connaît un succès retentissant avec son album City to City (1978) et le tube planétaire "Baker Street". Deux ans plus tard, Snakes and Ladders poursuit son exploration d’un rock pop sophistiqué, porté par une production soignée, des harmonies vocales élégantes et une écriture toujours nuancée. Moins éclatant commercialement, l’album reste emblématique du style raffiné et introspectif de Rafferty.

Known at least to the general public for its sublime ride 'Baker Street', Rafferty was out of radar from a new album recorded in 1979, Night Owl. Snakes and Ladders is part of the most interesting albums and most convincing in this folk rock vein that characterizes it. There are an incredible number of excellent pieces including the beautiful "The Right Moment" will be re-recorded later by Olivia Newton-John. Albums those years were steeped email or rather synthetic discoveries that give the listening today a rather dated next to these productions. Uncomfortable on stage, Rafferty experienced a late career eclipsing. However the quality of his lyrics, his sense of melody and his particular charisma make Gerry Rafferty, who died at 63 after having fallen into a violent alcoholism, have deeply marked the history of folk.

Gerry Rafferty, the Scottish singer-songwriter who rose to fame with Stealers Wheel, achieved solo stardom with City to City (1978) and the global hit "Baker Street".
