Black Pearl - Black Pearl (1969)

Black Pearl. San Francisco 1969. Three guitarists! A singer will give body and soul. An omnipresent battery, strong and marked tempo. A low round, firm and well promoted. Given the place of residence of the group and the album recording of the year, it is hardly surprising to some similarities with Big Brother & the Holding Company and the acid rock movement in California. But unlike most of their fellow musicians of the time, Black Pearl favors sustained rhythms, full of ardor and vivacity, a certain joy. The guitars are rough, sometimes crunchy, sometimes fuzzy, sometimes bathed in reverb, with predominant acute. The singer, who would think of Otis Redding White and the rhythmic base give a soul coloring; while the guitars are rather the crossing of an energetic psychedelic hard (no hovering in this album), an acid rock twirling see a garage rock 60's.

Except the last, the titles are full of energy, driven by the song and the battery; this battery moreover, that often only by his groove focuses all the attention. A forgotten group but remains among the best in the San Francisco scene of 67-69.Black Pearl. San Francisco 1969. Trois guitaristes ! Un chanteur se donnant corps et âme. Une batterie omniprésente, au tempo fort et marqué. Une basse ronde, ferme et bien mise en avant.

Vu le lieu de résidence du groupe et l'année d'enregistrement de l'album, on ne s'étonnera guère de certaines similitudes avec Big Brother & the Holding Company et la mouvance acid rock de Californie. Mais au contraire de la plupart de leurs camarades musiciens de l'époque, Black Pearl privilégie les rythmes soutenues, plein d'ardeur et de vivacité, dans une certaine allégresse. Les guitares sont rêches, tantôt crunchy, tantôt fuzzy, parfois baignées de reverb, avec des aigus prédominants. Le chanteur, qui ferait penser à un Otis Redding blanc, ainsi que la base rythmique donnent une coloration soul ; alors que les guitares sont plutôt au croisement d'un hard psychédélique énergique (rien de planant dans cet opus), d'un acid rock virevoltant, voir d'un rock garage 60's.

Hormis le dernier, les titres débordent d'énergie, poussés par le chant et la batterie ; cette batterie d'ailleurs, qui, souvent par son seul groove focalise toute l'attention. Un groupe oublié mais demeurant parmi les meilleurs de la scène de San Francisco de 67-69.
