Copperhead - Copperhead

Guitarist and leader of Quicksilver Messenger Service, John Cipollina is characterized by a guitar playing of great fluidity and of high purity which reconciles a Randy California of Spirit. Initially a casual group (since 1970), Copperhead eventually became in 1972 a real band around John Cipollina therefore, Gary Philippet (vocals, piano and bottleneck), Jim McPherson (bass) and David Weber (drums). Signed to start at the Sunshine label of one of the organizers of Woodstock, the group will join soon Columbia for a first album that will prove to be the single, the record company refusing to produce a second despite some success, resulting the dissolution of the group ... This disc released in 1973, to measure the talent of John Cipollina whose solos illuminate the eight compositions on the album. Musically the disc is at the crossroads between psychedelic rock ( 'They're Making A Monster'), early hard rock ( 'Roller Derby Star'), glam ( 'Pawnshop Men'; 'Kibitzer') and Californian pop ( 'A Little Hand'). The unit of the disc being exclusively on the guitar parts of John Cipollina. Then of course the rest of the band is not outdone of course, the piano parts, the hard work on the chorus (as befits a Californian group ...) also make the charm of this record deserves reassessment.

Guitariste et leader du Quicksilver Messenger Service, John Cipollina se caractérise par un jeu de guitare d'une grande fluidité et d'une grande pureté qui le rapproche d'un Randy California de Spirit.
Au départ un groupe occasionnel (dès 1970), Copperhead finit par devenir en 1972 un véritable groupe autour de John Cipollina donc, de Gary Philippet (chant, piano et bottleneck), Jim McPherson (basse) et David Weber (batterie). Au départ signé chez Sunshine le label d'un des organisateurs de Woodstock, le groupe rejoindra très vite Columbia pour un premier disque qui s'avèrera être le seul, la maison de disque refusant d'en produire un second malgré un certain succès, entraînant la dissolution du groupe...
Ce disque sorti en 1973, permet de mesurer le talent de John Cipollina dont les soli illuminent les 8 compositions de l'album.
Musicalement le disque est à la croisée des chemins entre rock psychédélique ('They're Making A Monster'), début du hard rock ('Roller Derby Star'), glam ('Pawnshop Men' ; 'Kibitzer') et pop californienne ('A Little Hand'). L'unité du disque se faisant exclusivement sur les parties de guitare de John Cipollina. Alors bien sur le reste de la bande n'est pas en reste bien sur, les parties de piano, le gros travail sur les choeurs (comme il se doit pour un groupe californien...) font aussi le charme de ce disque qui mérite une réévaluation.
