Aussitôt dans la foulée de son premier album et de son premier tube 'Born To Be Wild', le groupe américain de hard rock psychédélique se retrouve en studio milieu 1968 pour mettre en boîte son deuxième album avec les morceaux de son chanteur John Kay et de son producteur Gabriel Mekler. 

En fait de hard rock, Steppenwolf propose ici une collection hybride de différents styles, désorientant l’auditeur, composant ballades et utilisant sections de cordes. Il est difficile d’y trouver de quoi s’exciter devant d’autres chansons plutôt pop, blues, mais l’album vaut surtout pour l’épatant 'Magic Carpet Ride' de John Kay, au rythme syncopé excitant issu d’une ligne de basse imaginée par Rushton Moreve, au texte bien dans la mouvance psychédélique de l’époque, écrit en vingt minutes, soutenu par une partie d’orgue Hammond spectaculaire et des strates de guitares saturées.

Néanmoins les ventes de l’album dépassent le demi-million et il atteint la 3ème place du Billboard, à la même position que son hit 'Magic Carpet Ride' qui lui se vend encore mieux que le classique 'Born To Be Wild'.

Immediately on the heels of his first album and his first hit 'Born To Be Wild', the US group of hard psychedelic rock is found in the studio mid 1968 to box his second album with the pieces of his singer John Kay and his producer Gabriel Mekler. In fact hard rock, Steppenwolf proposes a hybrid collection of different styles, disorienting the listener component ballads and using string sections. It is difficult to find something to get excited before other rather pop songs, blues, but the album is amazing especially for the 'Magic Carpet Ride' by John Kay, the exciting syncopated rhythm from a line low imagined by Rushton Moreve, the text well into the psychedelic movement of the time, wrote in twenty minutes, supported by a Hammond organ part and spectacular layers of guitars. 
Nevertheless the album sales exceed half a million and reached 3rd place in the Billboard in the same position as his hit 'Magic Carpet Ride', which it is selling even better than the classic 'Born To Be Wild'.
