Sting - ... Nothing Like The Sun (1987)

2nd solo album from the former singer-bassist Police, Nothing Like the Sun confirms it was necessary Sting supremacy in the musical landscape of the late 80s he affirms his maturity and commitment. It is also a melting pot of influences.'Lazarus Heart 'opens the way with a brisk pace but vaguely Latin jazz orchestration. Finally, the maturity of Sting is expressed through a series of very involved songs: the very explicit "History will teach us nothing," the story is written with the blood of men, on a pure reggae juice, effective . Il y affirme sa maturité et son engagement. C’est aussi un melting pot d’influences.'Lazarus Heart' ouvre le bal avec un rythme enlevé vaguement latino mais une orchestration jazzy. 'Straight To My Heart', un peu plus loin, exploite également ce mélange jazzy-latino, avec un rythme à contretempo que l’on entendait parfois dans le répertoire de Police. Puis l’émotion prend le pas avec d’abord 'Be Still My Beating Heart' : beaucoup de poésie dans les mots et des mélodies qui s’envolent, mélodies ciselées en orfèvre, à la fois variées et cohérentes au sein du même morceau. La guitare est assurée par l'ex-compère, Andy Summers. Douce mélancolie avec le très sobre 'Secret Mariage', ou 'Sister Moon', jazz langoureux pour insomniaques lunatiques, solo de saxophone en intro par Branford Marsalis. Même la reprise de Jimi Hendrix, 'Little Wing', avec la participation de Gil Evans, est très épurée, planante.

Musique délicatement subtile pour 'English Man In NY', reggae jazzy d’une élégance toute british dérivant vers un pont musical hip-hop soulignant que New York est un lieu de mélange culturel.

Sting donne même dans une espèce de rap sauce jazzy avec une adaptation très personnelle de la légende de l’arche de Noé, 'Rock Steady'.  Enfin, la maturité de Sting s’exprime au travers d’une série de chansons très impliquées : le très explicite "History will teach us nothing", l’histoire s’écrit avec le sang des hommes, sur un reggae pur jus, efficace. Et Sting retient un évènement de l’histoire de cette fin de décennie 80 : les veuves de la dictature Pinochet, 'They Dance Alone', avec un texte parlé en espagnol, les mélodies sont ici très fluides avec des sonorités de flûtes et de guitares sèches (Clapton et Knopfler en guests) et une fin salsa en guise d’espoir. 'Fragile', en position plus ou moins centrale, est le joyau de cet album, rythmique chaloupée sans excès, intro et solo de guitare à tomber, et toujours de très beaux textes illustrant une mélodie sublime. Ce sont donc de succulents ingrédients que l’on déguste à la table de Sting, très variés, très équilibrés et toujours assaisonnés d’une touche de jazz, son premier amour. A consommer sans modération… Bon appétit.
