Initially, Charles Lloyd was a straighforward jazz artist by the late sixties, he was among the many jazz artist moving in the direction of fusion(eclectic jazz/rock hybrid. Popular in the late sixties and early seventies) one of his most interesting periods as an artist/musician was in the early seventies when he released waves and it's follow up warm waters. waves features an unlikely mix of contributing artists such as gabor szabo (Santana famously covered his 'gypsy Queen') and Bach Boys Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Carl Wilson. There is not a bad track on here. The music is mellow psychedelic with elements of early seventies jazz fusion. Lloyd sounds great throughout, playing flute on cuts like 'TM' and 'Rikisheh'. Just because it's mellow, don't misconstrue mellowwith bland and boring.
