Jesse Colin Young était déjà un chanteur folk bien établi à New York, avec deux disques sous son manteau, quand il a rencontré le multi-instrumentiste et ancien musicien de bluegrass Jerry Corbitt et formé Les Youngbloods (nommé ainsi d'après l'un des albums solos de Young). A l'origine un duo, ils ont rapidement élargi l'effectif dans un groupe de rock électrique, avec Young (basse / chant), Jerry Corbitt (lead guitare / harmonica / chant) Lowell Levinger (guitare / piano) et Joe Bauer (batterie). Sorti en 1967 sur RCA Records, leur premier album était riche en reprises, dont des compositions de Fred Neil, Dino Valenti, Paul Arnoldi et George Remailly, ainsi que plusieurs chansons de blues bien connues. Il n'y avait que quatre originaux, dont deux par Young et deux par Corbitt. Leurs racines dans le folk et le blues étaient très évidentes à ce stade, mais leur son a aussi des similitudes avec la plupart des groupes psychédéliques de l'époque sur la côte Ouest. En effet 'The Other Side Of This Life' et 'Get Together' ont ensuite été repris par Jefferson Airplane. A noter également l'utilisation par Levinger du piano électrique Wurlitzer, ce qui était tout à fait unique pour un groupe de rock de leur temps.

Sorti en 1967, ce premier album éponyme du groupe The Youngbloods révèle une folk-rock élégante teintée de jazz et de blues. Porté par la voix douce et feutrée de Jesse Colin Young, le disque propose une alternative paisible à l'agitation psychédélique de la côte ouest. Loin des effets tape-à-l’œil, cet opus séduit par sa sincérité acoustique, ses arrangements soignés et ses harmonies subtiles. La chanson "Get Together", devenue un hymne pacifiste, reste l'un des titres emblématiques de l'époque.

🇺🇸 Biography (English)

Jesse Colin Young was already an established folk singer in New York City, with two LPs under his belt, when he met multi-instrumentalist and former bluegrass musician Jerry Corbitt and formed The Youngbloods (named after one of Young's solo albums). Originally a duo, they soon expanded into an electric rock band, with the lineup of Young (bass/vocals), Corbitt (lead guitar/harmonica/vocals) Lowell Levinger (guitar/piano) and Joe Bauer (drums).

Released in 1967 on RCA Records, their debut album was heavy on cover material, including numbers by singer-songwriters Fred Neil, Dino Valenti, Paul Arnoldi and George Remailly, plus several well-known blues songs. There were only four originals, two by Young and two by Corbitt (including Corbitt's jug-band styled "Grizzly Bear", which had moderate successs as a single). Their roots in folk and blues were very much evident at this point, but their sound also had similarities with many of the west-coast psychedelic bands of the time. Indeed both Neil's "The Other Side Of This Life" and Valenti's "Get Together" were also covered by Jefferson Airplane. Also of note was Levinger's use of the Wurlitzer electric piano, which was quite unique for a rock band of their time.

The Youngbloods marks the debut of the band led by singer-bassist Jesse Colin Young. Blending folk, rock, blues, and jazz, the album is a refined and heartfelt offering that stands out from the psychedelic trend of the time. Known for their mellow sound and poetic lyrics, the group would later find major success with the reissue of "Get Together", a timeless call for peace and brotherhood. This debut is a subtle, intimate introduction to their unique sonic universe.
