Biography (English)
British blues pioneer John Mayall made his mark by discovering and fostering guitar legends such as Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor. By 1970, now based in Los Angeles, he recorded USA Union, an album rooted in blues but deeply experimental. With no drummer, Mayall relies on the rich interplay between guitar, violin and bass. The record reflects his shift toward a more introspective, acoustic-jazz infused sound, capturing both personal and societal unrest of the era.
USA Union can be considered as a major element in the extensive discography of John Mayall. Delivered in 1970 this opus follows another important work, The Turning Point, recorded in 1969 at the Fillmore East in New York. As stated so aptly title, our man is surrounded by American musicians including two Canned Heat defectors, namely the prodigious bassist Larry Taylor and guitarist Harvey Mandel, which can add to the problem without long list of wonders guitarists who accompanied Mayall. The group is completed by violinist Sugar Cane Harris, studio musician who played with Frank Zappa and Johnny Otis among others. 'Disappearing Nature' which opens the record shows that Mayall did not wait for the Copenhagen summit to be concerned about the future of our planet! The game with delicacy of Harvey Mandel wonders on this title. 'Crying' long seen blues electric violin Sugar Cane Harris support poignantly the haunting vocals of John Mayall. Finally all this opus is enamelled fabulous bass parts of Larry Taylor, what a nice solo on 'Took the Car' !
