Paru en octobre 1969, Led Zeppelin II confirme le statut du groupe britannique comme pionnier du hard rock et du heavy blues. Enregistré dans différents studios au fil de leur tournée américaine, cet album est un condensé d’énergie brute, de virtuosité et d’innovation sonore. Des titres comme « Whole Lotta Love » ou « Heartbreaker » sont devenus emblématiques, marquant l’histoire du rock par leur puissance et leur audace.

Aucun faux pas dans cet album qui rentre sans conteste dans les meilleurs albums de tous les temps. Led Zeppelin est à l’aise dans tous les styles (hard rock, rock n’ roll, blues, ...) et prépare peu à peu son virage vers des influences plus orientales. La recette du mystérieux 'Whole Lotta Love' : un riff de Jimmy Page énorme et génial. 'Heartbreaker' est un titre bien plus complexe, mais le riff reste l'axe central du morceau. Entre la sorcellerie sonique du grand Page, le pilon de la batterie de John Bonham ('Moby Dick') et le jus dégoulinant sur la jambe de Robert Plant ('The Lemon Song'), Led Zeppelin réussit à transformer les excès du rock'n'roll en sublime expression artistique. Mais le plus grand hommage ici doit être rendu au moins connu des quatre, John Paul Jones, véritable homme de studio, fantastique dans ses interventions à la basse ('What Is And What Should Never Be', 'Ramble On' et surtout 'The Lemon Song' où les trois autres ont bien compris qu’il ne servait plus à rien de lutter - une telle explosion technique est digne des plus grands, un accompagnement classique sied à merveille pour ce chef d’oeuvre) ou à l’orgue (!Thank You'). Homme à tout faire, il est la passerelle indispensable entre un bouillonnant batteur et un guitariste doué en toute circonstance.

Any misstep in this album that goes without question in the best albums of all time. Led Zeppelin is comfortable in all styles (hard rock, rock and roll, blues, ...) and gradually prepares his turn to more Eastern influences.
