Sorti en juin 1970, In Rock marque un tournant fondamental dans la carrière de Deep Purple. C’est le premier album studio avec la formation "Mark II" (Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Glover, Paice), considérée comme la plus emblématique. Plus heavy, plus rapide, plus agressif que tout ce qu’ils avaient fait auparavant, l’album jette les bases du hard rock et précède même le heavy metal. C’est un manifeste sonore, dominé par les envolées vocales de Ian Gillan et les riffs furieux de Ritchie Blackmore.

Cet album pose les bases d'un nouveau genre musical que les critiques de l'époque appelleront hard rock. Le titre phare est 'Child In Time', aujourd'hui reconnu comme un classique du rock.
Une chanson longue de dix minutes où Ian Gillan nous montre toute l'étendue de ses capacités vocales, du chant posé aux cris perçants. La longue montée en puissance du morceau est fabuleuse et le solo du père Blackmore est un petit bijou à lui tout seul.
L'album s'ouvre sur un autre grand classique de Deep Purple : 'Speed King'. Le son de la guitare de Blackmore y est, comment dire, graniteux ! Les solos offrent un échange grandiose entre l’orgue de Jon Lord et la guitare de Blackmore. 'Flight Of The Rat' qui ouvrait la seconde face du vinyle est aussi construit sur un riff assez speed. Un titre qui met en valeur le jeu de Ian Paice avec un petit solo de batterie intégré (comme on les aime). Le groupe pouvait aussi proposer des morceaux bien plus lourds comme 'Into The Fire'. 'Anyway', sans citer toutes les compos, aucune ne présente de faiblesse. Ajoutons tout de même une mention spéciale pour le single 'Black Night' qui roule un vrai train d'enfer. A l’instar du monument auquel la pochette fait référence, Deep Purple In Rock est un album solide, massif et fondateur.

Released in June 1970, In Rock was a pivotal moment for Deep Purple, introducing the classic "Mark II" lineup. The album marked a shift towards a heavier and more aggressive sound, laying the groundwork for hard rock and early heavy metal. With Gillan’s soaring vocals and Blackmore’s fiery guitar work, In Rock is a defining statement of the band’s power and innovation.

This album lays the foundation for a new musical genre that critics of the time call hard rock. The title track is 'Child In Time', now recognized as a classic rock. A long song ten minutes when Ian Gillan shows the full extent of her vocal abilities, singing asked the screams. The long piece of the growing power is fabulous and the solo of Blackmore father is a gem in itself. The album opens with another classic Deep Purple: 'Speed King'. The sound of Blackmore guitar is, you know, granitic! The solos offer great exchange between the organ of Jon Lord and Blackmore guitar. 'Flight Of The Rat' which opened the second side of the record is also built on a riff enough speed. A title that highlights the play of Ian Paice with a small solo integrated battery (as we like). The group could also provide much heavier tracks like 'Into The Fire'. 'Anyway', without naming all the songs, none of this weakness. Add still a special mention for the single 'Black Night' which rolls a real train to hell. Like the monument which the cover refers, Deep Purple In Rock is a solid album, massive and founder.
