Free the Bees seems to have been recorded thirty-five years ago in the back of a crazy laboratory, in a heavy and ecstatic wetness, with Sky Saxon Seeds in the studio, The Chocolate Watchband slumped on the couch and drugs for everyone. Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher this time moved to Abbey Road Studios, and took the opportunity to offer a formation that is more like a plump and lush orchestra than their former band. Responsible, two years ago, for the already nifty Sunshine Hit Me. Become a true psychedelic fanfare, The Bees feast on the nectar everywhere: pop melodies, reggae rhythms and languid soul compose the sumptuous jumble of this prodigious second album, erected on cascades Hammond organs, boiling brass and warm choruses. All in all, delicious little bee stings.
Free the Bees semble avoir été enregistré il y a trente-cinq ans au fond d'un laboratoire fou, dans une moiteur à la fois lourde et extatique, avec Sky Saxon des Seeds dans le studio, The Chocolate Watchband avachi sur le canapé et des drogues pour tout le monde. Paul Butler et Aaron Fletcher se sont cette fois-ci déplacés (dans la joie) aux studios Abbey Road et en ont profité pour s'offrir une formation qui s'apparente davantage à un orchestre dodu et luxurieux qu'à leur ancien petit groupe, responsable, il y a deux ans, du déjà chouette Sunshine Hit Me. Devenus une véritable fanfare psychédélique, The Bees butinent le nectar partout : mélodies pop, rythmes reggae et soul languissante composent le fastueux fouillis de ce prodigieux second album, érigé sur des cascades d'orgues Hammond, de cuivres bouillants et de chœurs chaleureux. En somme, des délicieuses petites piqûres d'abeilles.
