Sorti en octobre 1970, Led Zeppelin III surprend le public en prenant une direction plus acoustique et folk que ses prédécesseurs. Enregistré en grande partie dans le cottage gallois de Bron-Yr-Aur, l’album reflète l’influence de la musique traditionnelle britannique et du blues rural. Ce virage stylistique démontre la richesse créative du groupe, tout en conservant des morceaux plus électriques comme le mythique « Immigrant Song ».

Sur leurs deux premiers albums, Led Zeppelin a déclenché un barrage implacable de heavy blues et de riffs rockabilly, et ce Led Zeppelin III fournit au groupe l'espace nécessaire pour se développer musicalement. Bien qu'il existe encore une poignée de titres metal rock, III est construit sur une base folk acoustique qui donne à la musique une profondeur supplémentaire. Et même les parties rock ne sont pas aussi simples que précédemment: le galop "Immigrant Song" est alimenté par le cri suraigu de Robert Plant, "Celebration Day" évolue blues-rock  avec un riff déformé de guitare slide, et "Out on the Tiles" louvoie sur un délicat éventail de riffs. Néanmoins, le cœur de l'album se trouve sur sa deuxième partie, lorsque le groupe s'immerge dans le folk anglais. "Gallows Pole" remet à jour un air traditionnel avec une ambiance menaçante, et "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" est un pamphlet acoustique envoûtant, tandis que "That's the Way" et "Tangerine" sont de chatoyantes chansons aux délicates saveurs country.

Released in October 1970, Led Zeppelin III marked a stylistic shift toward acoustic and folk influences, surprising fans expecting another hard rock assault. Recorded partly in the Welsh cottage of Bron-Yr-Aur, the album reflects traditional British folk and blues roots. Despite its softer sound, it features iconic hard rock moments like “Immigrant Song,” showcasing the band’s growing versatility.

On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, but Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before: the galloping 'Immigrant Song' is powered by Robert Plant's banshee wail, 'Celebration Day' turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and 'Out on the Tiles' lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delve deeply into English folk. 'Gallows Pole' updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and 'Bron-Y-Aur Stomp' is an infectious acoustic romp, while 'That's the Way' and 'Tangerine' are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes.
