Formé à Detroit en 1968, Rare Earth est l’un des premiers groupes de rock blanc signés chez Motown, sur un sous-label spécialement créé pour eux. Après le succès de titres comme Get Ready ou I Just Want to Celebrate, le groupe amorce en 1973 un virage audacieux avec l’album Ma, produit et entièrement écrit par Norman Whitfield, artisan du son Motown. Plus long, plus funk, plus socialement engagé, cet opus s’éloigne du rock psychédélique originel pour explorer des grooves étendus, fusionnant soul, funk et rock de manière orchestrale et hypnotique. Le morceau-titre, qui dépasse les 17 minutes, en est le sommet.

🇬🇧 Biography (English)

Formed in Detroit in 1968, Rare Earth was one of the first white rock bands signed to Motown, even inspiring the creation of a dedicated sub-label. After major hits like Get Ready and I Just Want to Celebrate, the band took a bold turn in 1973 with Ma, an album fully produced and written by Motown legend Norman Whitfield. This record shifts away from their psychedelic roots into extended funk-rock territory with orchestral arrangements and a deeper social edge. The 17-minute title track is a tour de force blending groove, soul, and psychedelia with Whitfield’s signature flair.
