Formé en 1969 par Jerry Miller et Don Stevenson, tous deux issus du groupe culte Moby Grape, The Rhythm Dukes s'inscrit dans le sillage du rock psychédélique californien. Le groupe recrute rapidement Bill Champlin (chant, guitare, orgue), transfuge des Sons of Champlin, ainsi que John Barrett (basse) et Fuzzy Oxendine (batterie). Leur musique navigue entre rock roots, folk, soul et jam session. L’album Flashback, capté en live studio en avril 1970 dans une église de San Anselmo, ne verra le jour qu’en 2005, offrant un témoignage rare de ce projet éphémère mais inspiré.

The Rhythm Dukes emerged in 1969, founded by Moby Grape’s Jerry Miller and Don Stevenson. Soon joined by Bill Champlin (from the Sons of Champlin), bassist John Barrett, and drummer Fuzzy Oxendine, they crafted a blend of roots rock, soul, folk, and jam-laced psychedelia. Their only recorded session, Flashback, was laid down live in April 1970 at a converted church in San Anselmo. Released posthumously in 2005, it showcases the raw and heartfelt energy of a band that burned briefly but brightly.
