Sans pour autant faire l'effet de l'arrivée d'un chien dans un jeu de quilles, ce tout premier album de Taj Mahal débarqua dans l'univers du blues de cette fin des années 60 en bousculant déjà quelques conventions du genre. Le chanteur-guitariste-harmoniciste a alors 26 ans, et sa manière de chanter, déjà, doit davantage à Wilson Pickett qu'à Albert Collins. Taj Mahal ne se prive pourtant pas, dès cet enregistrement originel, de et de piller le répertoire classique avec des emprunts à Robert Johnson ("Dust My Broom") à Willie Mc Tell ("Statesboro Blues") ou à Sleepy John Estes ("Leaving Trunk" et aussi le très jovial "Everybody's Got To Change Sometime"). Mahal apparaît comme un novateur dans sa façon d'accéder au blues, de le doper de l'intérieur, en le dotant notamment d'une interprétation instrumentale impeccable. Dont celle de Ry Cooder qui n'est pas le moindre des acteurs, lui qui se partage les guitares avec Jessie Ed Davis, Taj Mahal se chargeant de la slide. C'est ainsi une formation des plus déterminées et des plus complètes – avec une redoutable section rythmique – qui signe là l'un des maillons essentiels de la jeune scène blues en train de naître alors.

Without making the effect of the arrival of a dog in a game of bowling, this first album of Taj Mahal landed in the world of blues of the late 60s already jostling some conventions of the genre. The singer-guitarist-harmonicist is then 26 years old, and his manner of singing already owes more to Wilson Pickett than to Albert Collins. Taj Mahal does not deprive himself, however, from this original recording, and loot the classic repertoire with borrowing Robert Johnson ("Dust My Broom") Willie Mc Tell ("Statesboro Blues") or Sleepy John Estes (" Leaving Trunk "and also the very jolly" Everybody's Got Sometime Change "). Mahal appears as an innovator in his way to access the blues, to boost it from the inside, giving it including an impeccable instrumental performance. Including that of Ry Cooder who is not the least of the actors, he who shares the guitars with Jessie Ed Davis, Taj Mahal taking charge of the slide. It is thus a formation of the most determined and the most complete - with a formidable rhythmic section - which signs there one of the essential links of the young blues scene being born then.
