Spirit is a Californian music group founded in 1967 by guitarist and vocalist Randy California and by the jazz drummer Ed Cassidy, his stepfather, backed by vocalist Jay Ferguson.The group did not like so much this first record, especially pointing the finger producing Lou Adler and Marty Paich arrangements, which, according to them, unnecessarily overloaded songs. Yet these, almost all written by vocalist Jay Ferguson, overcome these disadvantages without any harm rather minor and form a coherent and extremely effective, no relation to what is done at the same time in others California groups.
Spirit est un groupe de musique californien fondé en 1967 par le guitariste et chanteur Randy California ainsi que par le batteur de jazz Ed Cassidy, son beau-père, soutenus par le chanteur Jay Ferguson. Le groupe n’aimait pas tellement ce premier disque, pointant surtout du doigt la production de Lou Adler et les arrangements de Marty Paich, qui, selon eux, surchargeaient inutilement les chansons. Pourtant, celles-ci, presque toutes écrites par le chanteur Jay Ferguson, surmontent sans aucun mal ces inconvénients plutôt mineurs et forment un ensemble très cohérent et d’une efficacité redoutable, sans aucun rapport avec ce qui se fait au même moment chez les autres groupes de Californie.
